General

1. What’s it all about?
It’s all about finding practical solutions to climate change, providing a good service to the community and having fun at the same time.

2. Why is it called Big Lemon?
Tom had a moment of inspiration after seeing some lemons on a grocery stand and thinking that would make a good colour for a bus…

3. What difference can a little bus company make?
Not a huge amount by itself, but if it can show how a community can shift from carbon-intensive transport to sustainable transport and other communities take the idea and run with it, the impact of lots of communities changing the way they get around can be big.

4. Can I do something similar where I live?
Quite possibly! Different countries have their own public transport rules and regulations, but if you’re in the UK there’s no reason at all why sometrhing like this wouldn’t work in your community. We’ve published a guide in association with Local United and NESTA which gives you a broad outline of what you need to do. Click here to download it.

Our Vehicles

5. How many vehicles do you have?
Six buses, a coach, an oil collection van and an ex-London taxi

6. What do they run on?
Most of the time our vehicles run on 100% biodiesel from waste cooking oil collected from local restaurants. At very low temperatures the biodiesel freezes so sometimes in the winter we have to add a little diesel or other additive to the fuel to keep it runny enough, but we try and minimise this as much as possible. Biodiesel is an evolving technology and we were the first bus company in the UK to run our whole fleet on it. More recently we have had trouble with our two newest buses, as they have had difficulty running on biodiesel in the winter due to the level of technology on the bus. We have made alterations to one of the buses and have run a successful trial on biodiesel for three months, and we aim to do the same with the other as soon as the study is finished. Apart from this our vehicles all run on 100% all the time, including the oil collection van and the taxi.

7. Why do they run on biodiesel from waste oil?
Because the carbon footprint is miniscule (80-90% less than diesel), the emissions are not as bad for your health, it diverts waste cooking oil from landfill, it keeps local people in business and it doesn’t require wars to be fought in far off places. If people didn’t use crude oil products like diesel there would also be no oil spills and the world would be a better place.

Our Drivers

8. How come all your drivers are so friendly?
Because we only hire friendly people and they are very happy to see you on the bus.

9. Why don’t your drivers wear a uniform?
We have a dress code (any of our branded clothing) but we don’t insist on what kind of clothes people wear as everyone’s different and everyone likes wearing different things

10. Are there any jobs available?
Possibly, have a look at the Jobs section.
